“Never say no”.
Chris Palliser, Virgin radio’s morning show co-host, imparted this wisdom to students during a presentation at Camosun College regarding the pursuit of employment in the radio industry. He elaborated that you should always be open to every opportunity and that you’re “constantly trying to reinvent yourself” in this line of work.
Palliser began his presentation with an entertaining introduction:
he has always enjoyed talking, so much so that he’s one of few students to get
detention for talking too much while attending Camosun College. In 2001 he took
the applied communications program which led to a co-op at Nanaimo’s 106.9 FM
The Wolf, followed by his first full-time radio gig shortly after in Fort
McMurray at their local station Country 93.3 FM. He later found work in Edmonton
at 92.5 Joe FM (as it was known as at the time) before travelling back to
Vancouver where he worked at The Beat 94.5 FM for 10 years. After the birth of
their daughters, Chris and his wife decided it was time to return to Victoria so
that they could “raise them on island time”. In doing so he was able to land a
job at Virgin Radio as a co-host on their morning show alongside Brittany King.
After a Q & A session with students, Palliser
broke down how he is able to maintain success in the industry and how those of
us interested in pursuing a passion for radio can get started. He suggested
finding smaller towns or communities with a radio station like Dawson Creek to
get your foot in the door. After that, in radio (and almost every business
practice) “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” that can really aid you
in finding bigger and better opportunities as a media personality. Keeping in
touch with your connections was also touched upon. In this line of work keeping
good relations with people can make or break your career, and it’s never too
late to reach out to contacts. Keeping a level head in your endeavours was also brought up, informing us that ego won’t get us far and that we should be
genuine. Some of his final comments towards students might have been some of
the best wisdom: “take advantage of your time now”. Palliser felt he took for
granted his time as a student and wished he had spent more attention in class.
Palliser then wished us well and hoped he had gained some new listeners for his
morning show before leaving. Perhaps wishful thinking, but he’ll no doubt get
credit from his peers for trying.
